Much on the emancipation of the slaves in Guadeloupe and other French colonies in the Caribbean but also considers the effects in the English and Dutch islands.COCHINA015419 £18

GARDINER Cap. An account of the expedition to the West Indies, against Martinico, with the reduction of Guadelupe, and other the Leeward Islands; subject to the French King, 1759. By Captain Gardiner of the King's Royal Musqueteers, late Captain of Marines on board His Majesty's ship Rippon, employed on this expedition. John Baskerville, Birmingham. 1762. 91pp + 4 engraved plates + 91pp French translation. 3rd ed. (the first Baskerville ed.) 4to. Light damp staining to end pages otherwise clean in fine modern half calf binding with marbled boards. Gardiner commanded a detachment of Marines at St Pierre, Martinique, and again at the siege of Guadeloupe, publishing this account on his return. The British joint task force was repulsed at Martinique in January, 1759, but took Guadeloupe after a protracted campaign lasting from February to April of that year. A rare work. Sabin 26628. WILLYAMS C. An account of the campaign in the West Indies, in the year 1794, under the command of their excellencies Lieut. General Sir Charles Grey, K.B. and Vice Admiral Sir John Jervis, K.B. commanders in chief in the West Indies; with the reduction of the islands of Martinique, St Lucia, Guadeloupe, Marigalante, Desiada, &c. and the events that followed those unparrelled successes, and caused the loss of Guadeloupe. London, printed by T. Bensley for G. Nicol. 1796. 149 + [5] + 62 large pp + plan of Fort Bourbon in Martinique and map of the island with two aquatint engravings in text. 4to. 1st ed., a few tone spots otherwise fine in half calf retaining original marbled boards. 9 x 11" The author was a chaplain with the British navy at the time of the occurrence of the events described. Rare. Note this edition does not include the full page acquatint plates. It is printed in a smaller size font and has much smaller margins than the other edition.WILLYAMS017662 £650
