BERBICE Monthly Return of Pln. Hope & Experiment, Berbice Berbice. 1833. Large 3pp folded letter sheet, partially printed and completed in manuscript. Addressed to 'Hugh McCalmont Esq., care of Messrs Charles Ironside, Liverpool' and endorsed 'consignee of produce p Regular.' Very fine. The return gives a detailed account of sugar and rum produced and the distribution of the slave labour force with two marked as 'Runaways.' This is followed by a long description of the month's events including the death of two slaves and widespread sickness with visits from the doctor on 17 occasions. 'A great number of your Africans are old and feeble and if they are allowed to sit down all together the field gang will be seriously reduced.' Two Buts of Sherry shipped to St Kitts plus Stout, Porter, Burton Ale and Brandy at a total cost of £65.12.8 Mr Adlaw writes back to say the Burton Ale was sour and the sherry remained unsold.
