Scottish Additional Halfpenny Mail Tax marks.  These marks were introduced in 1813 following the partial repeal of an Act of Parliament which had granted exemption of toll charges for mail coaches. With mail coaches being charged tolls in Scotland the Post Office responded by levying an extra halfpenny on all letters carried by mail coach in Scotland.  The tax was abolished on 5th December 1839 with the introduction of Uniform Fourpenny Postage.

1826 (7 Jun) NEWCASTLE Add! ½ in green (H/S 176) on EL from London to Kelso. A Add Half mark should have been struck in London but was not due to confusion as to whether it was chargeable. Prior to summer of 1825 mail coaches had travelled via Berwick and mail to the border towns went on by horse post so was not chargeable. Mail coaches were then re-routed via Wooler and Coldstream to improve the speed of the mail between London and Edinburgh and thus mail to the border towns was carried by coach.
