1780 manuscript passport signed by Stephen Kemble while in St Johns Harbour on the coast of Nicaragua on 2 May.
'I certify that the Bearer Captain Thompson has my permission to quit the ship Horatio and proceed to Jamaica, on his private affairs. To whom it may concern.' Single sheet, folded. Brigadier-General Kemble had joined the expedition to take Nicaragua from the Spanish with a force known as the Jamaica Volunteers. Sickness began to decimate the troops and the force was eventually forced to withdraw.
