ROSSEL Auguste L. Combat Navale , livré le 18 décembre 1779 par le COMTE de la MOTTE-PIQUET, chef d’escadre.

Paris (1791)
Large hand coloured engraving with good margins with repair at lower right in margin only. 28 x 22"
Depicting a sea battle off the coast of Martinique between an English fleet and three French men of war. One of a series of 18 naval battles of the American Revolutionary War that Rossel painted for King Louis XVI. At the bottom of each of these prints is an allegory representing Thetis with her hand on a ship on which a triumphal wreath decorates the poop deck, surmounted by the arms of France. With the other hand she gestures to Neptune to protect combat seen in the distance while a Triton celebrates the victory with a conch shell.
